I know these 24/7 diners from countless US movies and series, and I have to say: it really hooks me.
Sometimes I sit in a completely normal snack bar here in Germany and imagine myself sitting in an American diner. And I act all cinematic, distant, cool. No matter the situation, no matter the time—this diner always has exactly what you need.
It is somehow fascinating how fascinating and romantic US culture feels to me as a German. What kind of feeling towards life must that be?
I imagine how nostalgically romantic it is, these backgrounds paired with the American mindset and maximum freedom. There is always something going on, and it’s like a mental adventure. I can’t really describe it, I lack the right words for it.
Here in Germany, everything feels less alive, more sterile. Like it’s a completely different life. Even though we do have 24/7 shops here in Germany, the feeling is totally different. We Germans are more closed off, less open, and we have different backgrounds. When I watch your movies, your series, I see: yeah, that’s how life should be. (if it’s not movies like Saw, of course
) You guys seem so free and so at peace with yourselves and your lives.
Movies follow a script, and so do series. But isn’t it true that they reflect your spirit? Your soul, your culture?
Do you actually ever wonder how it affects others when your movies run worldwide, how Germans see Americans and your culture?

Oh Dennis…this is such a beautiful and kinda sad post, i just wanna give u a huge virtual hug right now!
That diner stuff really hit me. Guess what? I am literally sitting in a crappy little diner in Ohio right now, drinking terrible drip coffee that tastes like hot water, and reading your text. And youre absolutely right – it IS a vibe, but its funny how perspective changes everything.
You romanticize our culture because Hollywood is just so damn good at selling it. Yes, these diners have a soul. You can sit there at 3 AM, nobody judges u, you get pancakes and the waiter calls u honey even though they don’t know u. It feels free. But that freedom often comes from the fact that life here is unpredictable. That carefree feeling in the movies is often just a mask in reality.
It is totally crazy for me to hear that u find Germany sterile. For us Americans, Germany is the absolute definition of romance
When we think of your country, we see old castles, cobblestone streets, centuries old half timbered houses and these cozy christmas markets. For us THAT is like out of a fairytale movie! You guys have history and a depth that we totally miss here. Over here everything is made of concrete, plastic and neon signs.
I guess we always want exactly what we don’t have ourselves, right? Pop culture is like a funhouse mirror. But thats the best part: through your eyes i am learning to appreciate my own country a little bit more again. And maybe u should see your sterile Germany through my glasses sometime – because it is actually beautiful. Let’s just toast virtually in the diner, u with your drip coffee and me with… well, with even more terrible coffee!
